The Story Behind The Beach House Design

A Family’s Cherished Retreat at Rehoboth Beach

Have you ever walked into a house and instantly seen its potential? That spark of imagining what it could become? The Beach House was one of those places for me. From the moment I stepped inside, I could feel that this wasn’t just a house—it was a future retreat, waiting to embrace the joyful chaos of family life and the calming rhythm of the ocean.

For this family of six (plus two lovable dogs), this Rehoboth Beach home was more than a second residence—it was a chance to create a sanctuary. Located just blocks from the shoreline, it needed to reflect who they were, celebrate their love for the beach, and grow alongside them.

What started as a 1990s shingled house evolved into a vibrant haven where sandy toes, wet swimsuits, and spontaneous family gatherings all had their place. Every corner tells a story of fun and love. This transformation was so meaningful, it even caught the attention of Delaware Today, who recently featured The Beach House as a standout design story. (You can check out their article here.)

Creating the Heart of the Home Where Memories are Made

This family doesn’t do things halfway, and neither do I. They wanted The Beach House to be a space where everyone—kids, parents, extended family, and even the dogs—could feel at home. And let me tell you, this house has a lot going on at any given time.

Every decision we made in the great room—from the raised ceiling to the cozy nooks—was about creating a space that felt as dynamic and welcoming as the family who lives here.

One of the biggest changes we made was closing off an existing porch to expand the great room. The family needed more elbow room, but we wanted to keep the airy, relaxed vibe of a beach retreat. By raising the ceiling and exposing angled beams, we added height and light, making the space feel as open and breezy as a day on the shore.

The great room’s many angles, a design challenge at first glance, became opportunities for creativity. From the custom window seat nestled into a corner to a reading nook tucked under a beam, every angle became a purposeful space for connection or retreat.

This reimagined great room became the heart of the house. It’s where kids sprawl out for rainy-day puzzles, dogs curl up after long beach walks, and everyone comes together for family movie nights or lazy afternoons with a good book. With cozy reading nooks, plenty of storage, and a layout designed for everyone to find “their spot,” this space isn’t just functional—it’s magical.

Spaces That Invite Connection

One of my favorite parts of this project was designing the dining area. The family loves hosting dinners with friends and extended family, so the space had to be both practical and stunning. We custom-designed a white oak dining table big enough for their gatherings (and then some), pairing it with seating that balances relaxed comfort and polished style.

The result? A space where warm donut breakfasts are shared, dinners with lifelong friends are enjoyed, and everyone can linger over long conversations as the sun sets. It’s the kind of dining area that makes you feel instantly welcome—whether you’re grabbing coffee after a morning bike ride or celebrating something special.

The Little Things Make It Home

It’s the small details that make The Beach House so special. The window seat in the great room isn’t just a place to sit—it’s where sandy flip-flops get kicked off, books get devoured, and beach bags find a home. The shiplap walls, distressed oak beams, and soft, natural palette nod to the ocean just beyond the doorstep without feeling cliché.

Even the dogs were considered in this design. Durable fabrics, wipeable surfaces, and a layout that accommodates wagging tails and wet noses mean this home truly works for everyone.

Telling This Family’s Story

The Beach House isn’t just a project for me—it’s a reflection of a family who knows how to embrace life. From sunny mornings on fat-tire bikes to ping-pong tournaments on rainy afternoons, every moment here feels intentional. It’s not about perfection; it’s about joy, connection, and creating a space that feels effortless and alive.

Being featured in Delaware Today is an honor, but the real joy comes from seeing this family create memories in the spaces we designed together. This house has grown with them, and I know it will continue to be a place where they laugh, love, and make more beautiful messes for years to come.

If you’re ready to create a home that tells your story, I’d love to help. Together, we can design a space that feels like an extension of you—beautiful, functional, and full of life.
